ATA box The TATA box is a short sequence of DNA located in the promoter region of eukaryotic genes. It is usually located 25-30 base pairs upstream of the transcription start site and contains the consensus sequence TATAAA. The TATA box binds to proteins, such as transcription factors, that are involved in transcription initiation. It helps to position RNA polymerase II at the start site for transcription and also helps to regulate gene expression by allowing for binding of other regulatory proteins.
